Working in the same vicinity or side by side with a spouse can seem daunting for some, but not for these amazing couples. They bring their love for each other to work every day in their roles as general managers and owners in the flourishing hotel industry in Curaçao. That’s the secret sauce of the hospitality business: make the guests feel welcomed and cared for through the LOVE of what you do and who you are as a couple and the rest takes care of itself. Behind the scenes are some extraordinary people making sure visitors get what they came for, that is, a vacation that is exactly what they had dreamed it would be, customized and attentive to details, and understanding of the wishes of their guests. by Sheila Botton
Landhuis Jan Thiel Luxury
Boris Zwierink and his wife Lieve bring the full force of their love into the Landhuis Jan Thiel and welcome me once again with open arms.
When asked what made him decide to take on the operations of Landhuis Jan Thiel, Boris exclaimed without skipping a beat, “I was in love with this place before it was even converted into a guest-house!”
It all came together for Boris in 2010. As a visitor to the island since he was six, Boris understands the diversity and culture of the island well. Always entrepreneurial, he opened a couple of restaurants between 1995 – 2000 and maintained his “day job” of private chef at the Landhius Jan Thiel property which was owned by his uncle and lawyer in Holland, Leo Spigt.
During this time Boris and his uncle often speculated about what they could do to convert the property into a guesthouse. Their ideas would germinate, they would argue or agree, until one day their vision became clear and plans were underway to transform the already magnificent property into something magical. In a painstakingly passionate five-year project Mr. Spigt realized his vision and converted Landhuis Jan Thiel into a spectacular heritage guest-house operated by his nephew/chef Boris.
Boris was working in Holland at that time, and when the time came to travel back to Curaçao, he returned with his wife, Lieve Zwierink. When he introduced Lieve to Curaçao, she also fell in love with the island and then they knew for sure the plan to manage the property was in action.
What sets Landhuis Jan Thiel apart?
Boris: “First of all, it’s a very unique place on nature’s path. There’s tranquillity here and yet in just five minutes you can be on the beach and visiting attractions. Besides the historical aspect and beauty there’s US!”
Lieve replies, “We take care of you, that’s our job, our passion and the thing we love to do most!”
Boris continues, “Our property is gated so it is safe and private. We host private functions and welcome VIP.
All our guests are treated like royalty and we tailor everything to their specific needs.
We love to see the reviews on Trip Advisor, they recommend us and rank us highly!”
In short notice Boris can cook up one of his mouthwatering Mediterranean meals to be served on their beautiful candlelit private terrace in a historical, luxurious environment that will take you a step back into Curaçao history.
What is your highlight managing the guest-house?
Lieve answers in a warm and sincere tone: “I hate saying goodbye to our guests, some of whom have become our special friends. It’s sad to see them leave, but a highlight when they return as many do!”
The entire estate can be rented exclusively to a group of maximum twenty people for various purposes for an exceptional and unforgettable experience in which privacy and service are guaranteed.
